What is “Beauty”?

What is “Beauty”?

It is often remarked that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, but evidence suggests that the human brain is hard-wired to respond positively to a thing of beauty. In addition to cultural or personal experiences, it seems that perceptions of beauty are also a product of evolution.

According to the theory of evolution, beauty is a symbol of health, youth and fertility. This plays an important role in male and female mate selection. Clear skin, lustrous hair, facial symmetry and full lips were all indications of a healthy and fertile woman. ‘Beauty is a universal part of human experiences. It provokes pleasure, rivets attention, and impels actions that help to ensure survival of our genes,’ says Mr Craig Rubinstein.

The concept of beauty can be unclear however, as it can also be a product of culture and society. Throughout history and across cultures, women have transformed their appearance to conform to a beauty ideal. Whether it is foot binding for femininity, corsets for cinched waists, stretched necks and ear lobes that are deemed attractive, people go to great lengths to achieve it.

Today western standards of beauty emphasise a toned, slender look, exuding fitness, youth and health.   With advances in technology, cosmetic surgery is no longer reserved for the rich and famous but is now available to anyone who wishes to “beautify” themselves. Despite the many definitions and ideals of beauty around the world, at Cosmetic Surgery For Women, we believe that the way a person carries themselves will ultimately affect how others perceive them.

Because confidence is beautiful.
