Education and Training

Dr David Ross began his training as a plastic surgeon after receiving his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1984. He then undertook his basic surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital prior to undergoing advanced surgical training in plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery and earning his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1993. He went on to pursue three years of advanced post-fellowship training with several of North America’s leading plastic surgeons, returning to Melbourne in 1996 to establish his practice at Bayside Plastic Surgery.

Dr Ross began his international training in 1993 at the University of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children in Ontario, Canada, the largest hospital in the world dedicated entirely to children. He joined as a Clinical Fellow in Plastic Surgery, training on the surgical correction of birth deformities, particularly of the face and the hand. During his training in Toronto, Dr Ross undertook a significant amount of microsurgical research on the topic of nerve regeneration, earning an award after it was presented at the 1995 International Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (IPRAS) meeting in Kyoto, Japan.

Following his training at the University of Toronto, Dr Ross spent his next year as a Clinical Fellow and Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery at Atlanta’s Emory University School of Medicine. In Atlanta, he furthered his training in the field of breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery, working closely with John Bostwick and Carl Hartrampf, two leading and revered reconstructive plastic surgeons in the field of breast reconstruction at the time in North America.

Dr Ross also accepted a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, arguably the world’s most famous centre for hand surgery, and also the home of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH). In Louisville, Dr David Ross worked and trained with several renowned hand surgeons, including Harold Kleinert and Joseph Kutz. Having completed his advanced plastic surgery training in North America, Dr David Ross returned to Australia to establish his practice as a plastic surgeon in Melbourne, with interests in both reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery.

Dr David Ross undertakes his reconstructive and cosmetic surgery procedures at a number of different surgical facilities in Melbourne, conveniently located for the patients of his three practices.
