As Dr Ross was involved in the development of endoscopic plastic surgery techniques during his training at Emory University in Atlanta, he has assumed a leading role in Australia’s development of this type of endoscopic (keyhole) and minimal scar surgery. Education and Training
Dr David Ross began his training as a plastic surgeon after receiving his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1984. He then undertook his basic surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital prior to undergoing advanced surgical training in plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery and earning his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1993. He went on to pursue three years of advanced post-fellowship training with several of North America’s leading plastic surgeons, returning to Melbourne in 1996 to establish his practice at Bayside Plastic Surgery.
Dr Ross began his international training in 1993 at the University of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children in Ontario, Canada, the largest hospital in the world dedicated entirely to children. He joined as a Clinical Fellow in Plastic Surgery, training on the surgical correction of birth deformities, particularly of the face and the hand. During his training in Toronto, Dr Ross undertook a significant amount of microsurgical research on the topic of nerve regeneration, earning an award after it was presented at the 1995 International Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (IPRAS) meeting in Kyoto, Japan.
Following his training at the University of Toronto, Dr Ross spent his next year as a Clinical Fellow and Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery at Atlanta’s Emory University School of Medicine. In Atlanta, he furthered his training in the field of breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery, working closely with John Bostwick and Carl Hartrampf, two leading and revered reconstructive plastic surgeons in the field of breast reconstruction at the time in North America.
Dr Ross also accepted a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, arguably the world’s most famous centre for hand surgery, and also the home of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH). In Louisville, Dr David Ross worked and trained with several renowned hand surgeons, including Harold Kleinert and Joseph Kutz. Having completed his advanced plastic surgery training in North America, Dr David Ross returned to Australia to establish his practice as a plastic surgeon in Melbourne, with interests in both reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery.

Expertise – Publications and Training
Dr David Ross is respected both in Australia and internationally as a prominent plastic surgeon and trainer of other plastic surgeons.
Dr David Ross has published many articles on reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery and uses his training and experience to educate general practitioners, junior hospital resident doctors, nurses, and other plastic surgeons in Melbourne and across Australia.
He has been the supervisor of Plastic Surgery training at Monash Health for 10 years, overseeing the training of 25 Plastic Surgeons in that time.
He is a regular participant in the annual meetings of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Australasian College of Surgeons, where he frequently presents his research outcomes to his colleagues. Dr Ross performs more than 80 surgical procedures each month in his practice.
Contribution – International Plastic Surgery Missions
Dr David Ross has been a member of Interplast Australia since 1996. This organization was set up by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and Rotary International to assemble teams of plastic surgeons to offer their expertise to developing countries in South-East Asia and Pacific regions on a voluntary basis. It is supported through the Australian Government through its overseas aid program, AusAID. Dr Ross has been on previous missions to Fiji and Indonesia but is currently involved in establishing a relationship between the Monash Cleft Palate Team and the Cleft Palate Program at the Odonto Maxillo Facial Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, which he has visited each year, since 2005.
