Most abdominoplasty patients aren’t familiar with the term ‘designer belly buttons’, nor is it often a main concern of the patient when they are considering a tummy tuck. However, a designer bellybutton is a crucial part of your abdominoplasty procedure – it refers to the way your navel is reconstructed during the surgery, otherwise known as an Umbilicoplasty.
Our Plastic Surgeons at Coco Ruby Plastic Surgery are at the forefront of creating natural-looking bellybuttons for Abdominoplasty patients in order to achieve the ideal female umbilicus to compliment their tummy tuck.
Dr Craig Rubinstein, Dr Richard Sackelariou, Dr Rebecca Wyten, Dr Geoff Barnett and Dr Patrick Briggs have over 135 years in Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery experience between them in abdominoplasty procedures amongst others including other body contouring and breast enhancement procedures.
When patients ask about Tummy Tuck Surgery, they are often not initially thinking about their belly button – but as part of their procedures, our Surgeons get them a natural and pleasing result.
During the Tummy Tuck procedure, the original bellybutton of the patient is removed or relocated, as excess tissue is removed and the skin tightened and flattened. The surgeon then creates a new belly button for the patient.
The belly button can sometimes be customised to meet the patient’s version of an ‘ideal’ belly button.
Dr Richard Sackelariou follows ideals of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, which identifies the perfect navel as being ‘hooded and primarily horizontal,’ but some surgeon’s and patients might have other preferences, such as a more vertical looking belly button.
It is best to discuss your version of an ideal belly button shape with your Surgeon as part of your pre-surgery consultations; you can even bring in a photo of your ideal belly button so that your Surgeon has a better idea of what you are wanting to achieve.
Another difference between procedures is that some surgeons prefer to use liposuction as part of a Tummy Tuck to sculpt or shape the upper tummy and hips during the Abdominoplasty procedures, or to help contour around the navel area; whereas other surgeons prefer to remove fat around the belly button site and tummy area with direct incisions and not liposuction. As long as your Surgeon is highly adept at the procedure, you will get an excellent result – and our Surgeons are highly-skilled Surgical ‘artists’ when it comes to getting you a flatter, tighter tummy with a Tummy Tuck procedure.
Whilst it might seem a small part of your Tummy Tuck procedure, the appearance of your belly button contributes significantly to the overall effect of your procedure.
Our Surgeons all agree that the Umbilicoplasty part of the Abdominoplasty procedure is of great importance as it contributes significantly to the overall appearance of your Abdomen and to your Tummy Tuck results.
A natural-looking and well-reconstructed bellybutton also allow you to conceal any sign of Surgery and attain a ‘pre-pregnancy belly’.
