Blepharoplasty Eyelid Stitches Removal
Is having Eyelid Stitches removed after a Blepharoplasty procedure painful?
If you’ve been following a young patient’s journey through her Eyelid Reduction Surgery for lid ptosis, you’ll have seen her video journeys and blogs on our site as well as her cosmetic beauty channel. Late last year (2016), Amea May booked herself in for Blepharoplasty surgery to reduce her puffy upper eyelids. Frequent eyelid irritation and a puffy upper lid appearance frustrated her, although Amea remained nervous about having surgery. Following her successful surgery, you can now follow Amea’s recovery experience.
Nervous about having Eyelid Surgery? What is it really like?
Many patients are nervous about cosmetic procedures, particularly those that involve the eye area. And, like many patients, Amea did a lot of research before deciding on Cosmetic Surgery for Women and Men. Her main fears were:
- the level of pain
- looking ‘overdone’
- whether she was too young for surgery
- removal of her stitches
She couldn’t find much information online about eyelid stitches removal post-surgery, so she decided to vlog about her experience. Amea has created a video series which follows her post-surgery recovery journey.
Having Blepharoplasty Surgery in your early 20s
Amea wanted her puffy upper eyelids adjusted, but was still reluctant to have surgery. In fact, she nearly talked herself out of it altogether.
Some people inadvertently believe that eyelid procedures are only for people past a certain age. However, most adults over the age of 18, who are suitable candidates for surgery, may choose to have corrective eyelid surgery to reduce sagging, puffy eyelids. They may also find that eyelid skin folds hide their upper lashes, preventing them from wearing some forms of makeup.
Amea had long been concerned about her sagging upper eyelid skin and how it impacted her facial appearance. As an Eyelash Technician and top-rated beauty blogger, Amea was unhappy with how the heavy looking upper lids hid her eyelashes.
So in 2016, Amea May booked in for a consultation and was delighted to learn that he could assist her to remedy these issues. A few weeks after her initial consultation and mandatory ‘cooling-off’ period, Amea booked her surgery. She noted that she was didn’t want to linger as she was a ‘worrier’ about potential surgery pain.
Overcoming pre-surgery fears
Amea admits she nearly frightened herself into cancelling her procedure after watching it performed on YouTube. Graphic surgery videos can put off squeamish patients, and after watching it performed, Amea nearly cancelled.
However, she wanted to gain the benefits of the procedure in treating her upper lit ptosis. She notes she convinced herself to stay courageous and go through with the surgery she had long been wanting.
Amea admits that learning more about her options during a consultation helped with her fears.
In her video series about recovery and healing from Blepharoplasty, Amea reveals how she felt (and now feels) about pursuing her choice to have the surgery done. She wanted others to know about her surgical experience and what to expect when having your eyelid stitches removed.

Is being under the age of 30 too young to have your eyelids done?
Amea had wondered if only older patients qualified for an Eyelid Lift procedure. Certainly, Facelifts are unlikely to be performed on women or men in their 20s. However, eyelid reduction surgery is very different. Many patients in their 20s-30s, as well as in their 40s and beyond, have eyelid surgery to address their puffy eyelids.
Younger patients who inherited heavy eyelid skin or double lid folds, often seek surgery to achieve a more distinguished eyelid crease.
Eyelid Surgery in a younger vs. older patient: what’s the difference?
- Younger patients do tend to have more resilient skin, and hence, some may heal more quickly post-surgery.
- All patients will need to follow post-op care instructions and live a healthy lifestyle for optimal healing and scar reduction.
- Even so, there is a risk of surgical complications. Your Surgeon will discuss with you during your first consultation.
- Although some surgery risk rates can be reduced, other complications may occur despite you and your Surgeon’s best efforts.
For patients above 40, eyelid reduction is usually linked with:
- loss of skin collagen
- increased upper lid tissue which causes sagging or dropping.
‘Ptosis’ refers to sagging or drooping of the upper eyelid. This condition is relatively common in individuals aged 40-50, therefore this age group typically forms the majority of eyelid surgery patients.
However, even younger patients can have heavy, drooping eyelids. This is usually an inherited family trait and can sometimes be related to an illness, injury or asymmetry of the eyelid area.
Such was the scenario for Amea, who’s heavy lids were interfering with her eyelid health and causing her discomfort and self-consciousness.
What did Amea discover after having Blepharoplasty surgery?
- Amea indicated she was suffering from frequent eyelid skin irritations, including dermatitis.
- Irritation was primarily related to Amea’s excess, ‘heavy’ eyelid skin.
- As you can tell in her vlogs, Amea’s skin irritation has abated to a large degree.

So, did it hurt to have her eyelid stitches removed?
Whilst very nervous leading up to her surgery the team did their best to help Amea relax and calm her nerves.
- To her surprise, neither the surgery itself nor the suture removal process where nearly as uncomfortable as she had expected or feared.
- Her video series has a specific segment dedicated to the removal of eyelid stitches after blepharoplasty surgery.
- Please remember, that every patient experience does vary.
Ame’s sutures were removed one week after surgery and she noted that ‘[Getting my stitches out] didn’t hurt at all!’
“I’m so glad I went through with it and didn’t scare myself out of getting the surgery,” she admitted during her vlog. Amea noted it’d been “on her mind” for many years before she plucked up the courage to have a consult.
